Requirements Analysis

Requirements analysis is a vital step in the software engineering process. This is where you determine stakeholders’ needs and translate them into product requirements. When done correctly, this helps ensure the project delivers a final product that meets stakeholder expectations.

There are several different techniques to perform requirements analysis. Some examples include flow charts, data flow diagrams and Unified Modeling Language. These tools help to visualize the various software system aspects and communicate them to the team.

The project manager typically carries out requirements analysis and ensures that the process is aligned with project goals. Other members of the team may be involved in identifying and documenting requirements, such as business analysts and engineers. The analysis process should produce a requirements specification that can be used throughout the SDLC.


Software engineers use their problem-solving skills and programming language knowledge to prepare the blueprint for a piece of software. In the design phase, they take business needs and goals into account, make technological choices and plan out key architecture for a project.

Software is more complex than the typical building and requires an engineering process to be built efficiently. It is hard to scale a large piece of software without such a process.

The architecture of a software system can be considered in three levels – architectural, high-level and low-level design. The architectural level is the most abstract version of the software. It identifies major structural elements and their inter-relationship. The high-level and low-level designs are less abstract and describe the different components of a software system.


The implementation phase involves converting the software design into an actual working product. It includes implementing features and testing the software to ensure it is functioning properly in a real-world environment. This is a crucial step in the process of software development.

In general, the software engineering process is a systematic and disciplined approach to developing, operating, and maintaining software that focuses on the quality of products. It uses well-defined engineering principles and methodologies to produce scalable and reliable software.

The need for software engineering arose as the software industry grew and became larger than hardware industry. Large software requires a scientific and engineering process in order to work efficiently and reliably on real machines. Without such a process, the cost of developing and implementing software is incredibly high.

Large software requires a lot of work to be produced in order to make it reliable and efficient, which is why this discipline was established. The processes used are based on engineering and scientific principles, which helps scale the work up and lower costs (like manufacturing has done for hardware). These activities are sometimes referred to as “software fabrication” or “software manufacturing”. The process is also known as pure-conceptual SE. This is an important distinction to be made, since it differentiates SE from the more practical activities that have earned it this label.
